Education for evil
A quote from CBS news, regarding the allegations against the Duke lacrosse team:
“We do not want anyone from the NCCU family to seek retribution or take matters into their own hands,” Ammons [Chancellor of NC Central] said in a statement. “We have to exercise a great level of civility as we await the outcome of this investigation. I am encouraging our students to continue to show support for the alleged victim and to continue to plan events that better educate individuals about sexual violence and racism.”
This followed release of an email from a member of the lacrosse team, discussing the sexual pleasure he would receive from peeling the skin off of one of the strippers.
Did you notice the response? The proposed remedy? Let me recap in case you missed it:
to continue to plan events that better educate individuals about sexual violence and racism.
Is lack of education really the problem? Who doesn’t know about sexual violence and racism? Once again, if your worldview prohibits you from calling something evil, from acknowledging the depravity that lurks in the heart of man, the only card you have left to play is education.
This was the same point I made a few entries earlier about the war: Education (or dialogue) is not the answer. Evil will never be educated away or discussed away. And if you can’t acknowledge the reality of true, destructive, powerful, vicious, evil, then you have exactly zero effective weapons against it.
